Ogni lunghezza d'onda si focalizza a una distanza diversa, creando l'intervallo di misurazione verticale. Quando una superficie di interesse si trova all'interno di tale intervallo, una singola lunghezza d'onda della luce bianca sar\u00e0 a fuoco, mentre tutte le altre saranno fuori fuoco. Solo la lunghezza d'onda focalizzata passer\u00e0 attraverso il filtro pin hole per raggiungere lo spettrometro CCD.
