Une pointe plate, une \u00e9pingle ou une bille est charg\u00e9e sur un \u00e9chantillon d'essai avec un poids pr\u00e9cis. Les \u00e9chantillons de test peuvent \u00eatre de forme vari\u00e9e (cylindrique, par exemple) tant qu'il existe une zone plate d'une certaine longueur dans la direction du mouvement. La longueur de la piste peut \u00eatre ajust\u00e9e avant le d\u00e9but de la mesure. Au d\u00e9but du test, la pointe cr\u00e9e une piste d'usure lin\u00e9aire (motif en zigzag \u00e9galement possible). Le coefficient de friction est mesur\u00e9 avec pr\u00e9cision pendant l'essai par la d\u00e9flexion de la cellule de charge, facile et rapide \u00e0 calibrer. Les forces de frottement sont enregistr\u00e9es pour les mouvements avant et arri\u00e8re de la course. La vitesse du mouvement suit une onde sinuso\u00efdale avec une vitesse maximale au milieu de la course. La friction varie donc \u00e0 chaque position sur la piste en fonction de la vitesse et de la direction du mouvement.  Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l'encodeur de position externe 16 bits int\u00e9gr\u00e9, le frottement peut \u00eatre affich\u00e9 pour tout point sp\u00e9cifique de chaque passage. Ceci est essentiel pour \u00e9tudier avec pr\u00e9cision la tendance du frottement sur toute la longueur de l'essai.
