Une pointe plate, une \u00e9pingle ou une bille est charg\u00e9e sur un \u00e9chantillon d'essai avec un poids pr\u00e9cis et \u00e0 une position sp\u00e9cifique du centre de rotation. Lorsque l'\u00e9chantillon commence \u00e0 tourner, la pointe cr\u00e9e une trace d'usure rotative. Le coefficient de friction est mesur\u00e9 avec pr\u00e9cision par la d\u00e9viation d'une cellule de charge, \u00e9talonn\u00e9e avec pr\u00e9cision. Gr\u00e2ce au codeur de position externe 16 bits int\u00e9gr\u00e9, le frottement peut \u00eatre affich\u00e9 pour toute position ou zone sp\u00e9cifique pour chaque passage du cycle. De plus, l'encodeur de vitesse interne de 20 bits assure des changements lisses ou rapides de la vitesse de rotation de 0,01 \u00e0 5000 tr\/min pendant un seul essai, fournissant un coefficient de friction pr\u00e9cis en fonction de la vitesse. Les vitesses allant jusqu'\u00e0 0,01 tr\/min sont essentielles pour \u00e9tudier le frottement dans la zone statique et pour mieux comprendre la transition entre le coefficient de frottement statique et cin\u00e9tique.  Les taux d'usure de l'\u00e9chantillon peuvent \u00eatre calcul\u00e9s \u00e0 partir du profil 2D \u00e0 des positions choisies ou \u00e0 partir du profil 3D r\u00e9el de la piste d'usure enti\u00e8re.
