L'usura e l'attrito dei materiali nei liquidi o nei lubrificanti sono fondamentali per diverse applicazioni industriali. Ad esempio, i biomateriali per le sostituzioni biologiche, come articolazioni, stent e radici dentali, richiedono un'eccellente resistenza a lungo termine e una forza adeguata in un ambiente liquido. Le parti dei motori devono essere protette da un'adeguata lubrificazione per ridurre l'usura e l'attrito e prolungare la durata di vita.
